For My Nanna by Matthew Lee Knowles published on 2022-04-13T00:37:53Z This feels different to my other FOR pieces, it's intensely personal, written for the person who means the most to me in the world. If I hadn't gone to live with my nanna as a teenager I simply would not be who I am today, I might not be living in London, I might not have been a piano teacher, I might not even have been a professional musician. In this piece I have mixed together many pieces I used to play on the piano during those years, for example on the first page I combine the Hellraiser theme, with Rachmaninov prelude in C sharp minor at the same time as the Tchaikovsky piano concerto in B flat minor all with illusions to Grieg and Liszt. How many can you hear? As this is a special piece, I have included my nanna's voice at the end, after playing this down the phone to her, as a reminder that the person I wrote this for is a real, wonderful treasure of a human being.
