CHOCCYCHOX Matthew O’Connell, also known as MOC born in Cape Town, South Africa, is a 22 year old, dynamic, versatile singer and saxophonist whose music career began at the age of 6 when his Father (Sean O’Connell) introduced him to the keyboard and taught him to play his first song, “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder. Throughout his schooling career Matthew received piano lessons and performed with much aplomb. His parents and teacher were in for a surprise when they discovered that Matthew played by ear and not by reading the sheet of music in front of him – an extraordinary gift and blessing. During a school audition, one of the judges asked him if he had ever attempted to play the saxophone – a fiendishly difficult instrument to master but a welcoming challenge to Matthew… He has not stopped since! Upon completing school, Matthew decided to further his musical education by enrolling at the UNIVERSITY of Cape Town (UCT) – an institution with a fine legacy of rearing some of South Africa’s best. Inspired by his family’s musical background, Matthew opted to pursue Performance in Jazz and has been fortunate enough to be exposed to many genres of music which he incorporates into his soulful sound. Signed to Rude World Records in 2012, Matthew released his first single, Take It Slow in early 2013 with it receiving raving reviews and climbing radio charts. In August 2013, Matthew released his second single, Down. The music video Down is being aired on MTV Base and Channel O which has been received favourable in the industry. Due to his wide range of genres he was approached by Pascal and Pierce a popular SA dance duo to do a collab on their latest album “One Night Only” featuring Matthew on “End of Time”. He finds inspiration from a range of artists such as Usher, Bruno Mars, Beyonce, James Arthur, Ryan Tedder, Kirk Whalum, Gerard Albright, Cannonball Adderley, and Robin Thicke. His acknowledged tone is beyond his years and his energetic style is felt when he engages audiences both on and off the stage.
