Matt Gouck hails from a sleepy town in Northern Ireland called Comber, where his passion for electronic music was awakened at an early age from listening to Tiesto’s famous ‘In Search of Sunrise’ compilations. He was instantly drawn to the moody sounds and the ‘being taken on a journey’ feel of this compilation series and at only 14 years old, Matt knew what kind of DJ he wanted to be, in his own words “a journey DJ”.
When he was 19, his mum bought him the best present any aspiring young DJ could get, a set of Technics 1210’s. They were barely switched off unless Matt was in Belfast taking lessons on how to mix professionally at the school for keen and promising electronic talent ‘Sonic Academy’, where many of Northern Ireland’s best artists attended.
Gouck’s first live gig came at aged 20 at a popular local club night called ‘Nation’ in the nearby town Bangor. As word of his skills spread, and after winning a number of DJ competitions, he then went on to play at most of the Northern Irish Trance hotspots such as Roxy, Club 4M, Quest House, Shadow Rooms and various other nights. With Matt’s passion to build up a DJ set, he suited the BPM of early sets on mainstream trance nights, setting the mood and warming up for headliners such as W&W (Re Ward), Sean Tyas, Simon Patterson, Jordan Suckley (BBC Radio One), Wippenberg Judge Jules SisterBliss(Faithless) Jeremy Olander and Fehrplay to name but a few.
Unlike a lot of the current up and coming talent in Northern Ireland’s trance scene, Matt went the progressive route which was more of an organic path rather than a major decision. His love of the journey within a set was best suited to this style/genre. Nowadays progressive house is where he gets his kicks, where he feels at home, mixing funky to chunky, lighter to deeper and darker to more uplifting sounds.
Across the progressive house spectrum Matt Gouck’s main influences and inspirations are Eric Prydz, Jeremy Orlander and labels like Pryda Friends, Proton and Tronic amongst others. Currently Matt Gouck is the youngest and only progressive DJ outside of major cities Belfast and Londonderry/Derry with a ‘buzz’ surrounding him. In early 2013, one of Northern Ireland’s most famous figures in dance music, promoter/resident Col Hamilton, picked up a demo and instantly gave Matt his debut alongside international superstars Cosmic Gate and Richard Durand in one of the longest running weekly super clubs in the UK, and the most famous club in Ireland, ‘the mighty’ LUSH in Portrush.
Alongside DJing, Matt has spent many years honing his production skills on his preferred music software programme Abelton, and is now ready to share his own music with the world. 2015’s aims are to have his sounds appearing on leading labels and on the playlists of the globe’s premier progressive artists while breaking into more house orientated club nights to show he is much more than a warm up DJ. This impressive DJ’s production sound mirrors his DJ style in his own unique way so don’t expect anything generic. Matt Gouck is without doubt a must-hear DJ on the local scene whether it’s his warm up, support or peak time headline sets, and is one to watch out for as an international DJ/Producer in the not too distant future.
