Matilda Leko Matilda Leko Vienna “Music found me when I was a child. I could express my pain, my sorrow and my happiness through music, without being aware of it… and then it became my life, helping me to transform all the feelings within my soul into beautiful colours of music. I must be a lucky one…“ Matilda Leko, was born in Vienna as a child of a Serbian family that migrated to Austria in the late 1960’s. Music was a very important part of the family and therefore Matilda grew up with folkloristic music from Serbia, but also listened to Pop and Soul. She was always singing and imitating. The Gipsy roots on her mother’s side influenced Matilda at an early age as well, and she listened to all the melancholy voices and songs of the great Gipsy vocals from all over the Balkan. Later in life she was listening to Rock, Blues and at last she fell in love with Jazz. Matilda moved back to Serbia for several years. In her twenties, Matilda returned to Austria to study Jazz singing at the Vienna Conservatory. Very early on, she formed her own Jazz quintet with some of the greatest Viennese musicians. A few years later, she included the complexity of the Balkan rhythms with the odd meters such as 7/8ths, 9/8ths or 13/8ths into her music and found a new way of expression and sound… a unique kind of World Music was the result. Matilda is also acting and singing in theatre plays and movies for which she is also composing the music. Matilda, a musician that definitely knows no borders in making music, is one of the most authentic singers in Austria. Her phrasing is very mature, no matter if she sings Swing, Balkan, Bossa Nova or Gipsy. This modern, flexible and charismatic singer performs in English, Serbian, Portuguese, Romani, Yiddish, German, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Hungarian and Rumanian.
