Spryte (Mary Kay) spent most of her Middle School years buying cassette tapes and practicing her timing and delivery over the instrumental b-sides. At age 10, in 1986, RUN DMCs album Raising Hell was released with the song Peter Piper and this one song changed everything.. Mary Kay memorized it within weeks and would rhyme it to anyone who would listen. That same year her Uncle Danny brought her to Milwaukee Wisconsins Summerfest Music Festival and she got to see Run DMC live.
That was it for her she went home to tell her dad she was going to be a rapper.. Her dads response a the time was * Mary, you can't be a rapper, you're white*. Little did dad know.
Growing up in the country 30minutes North of Green Bay a barn was her stage, her brother and sister her adoring audience, and a pilfered screw driver her utilitarian microphone.
She memorized verses and would recite them for anyone willing to listen. Ice Cube, Too $hort, Tone Loc, L.L. Kool Jay, Beastie Boys, Slick Rick, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and Salt n Pepa blared through her headphones. She had fallen in love with words, "the way they fall off of your tongue, the way you can add to the beat or effect it with different lyrics or sounds... the quicker, the better".
She trusted her Adidas shell tops, baggy jeans, and gray hoodies to bely her femininity in the hip hop game. She was going to be a rapper, and a young female emcee was born.
At age 20 she had quite a few friends that were in the underground Rave scene as deejays. She started Daydreams Productions and started booking deejays and putting together shows with the help of Vibeosity Entertainment. The name Spryte came from a close friend, up until that day Mary Kay rhymed and was on fliers as Mary Kay, her friend Justin S. said * you remind me of one of those little sprites that follow rainbow Brite cuz your crazy and hyper all the time* Another dj stood up and said * That's it Mary! emcee sprite! that's you!*
the next show Mary hosted she was on the flier as Emcee Sprite. When she got serious about music she switched the I for a Y, because Coca Cola owns sprite with an i...so Spryte became her alias. Trademarked to her and 20 years later still her hip hop handle.
A fan of drum and bass and fast freestyles Spryte graced the stage throughout the Midwest with djs 3D and Danny the Wildchild from Chicago. Frankie Bones and Dj Skribble from New York and local deejays she booked for shows. Taking over as the Harmony Cafe Hip Hop Coordinator,Spryte found herself promoting and building the self esteem and careers of local hip hop artists.
At age 33 Spryte found the rooms of recovery and stopped drinking and using drugs. She continued to perform and record music until she moved to Penn State for her Masters Degree in 2015.
Spryte has finished her college degrees and will be reasing her first album in 7 years fall of 2021.
Spryte was signed to the Canadian Label Bring the Bars June 2021.
Along with another album.Spring 2022.
The Spirit of Spryte is a phrase coined by Spryte about her desire to always promote other artists as well as help humans in need. All though she had a troubled youth, went to jail, got involved in drugs and had some struggles she is always an optimistic woman with goals and dreams that seem unattainable.
However, as the Phoenix has taught her, she will arise from the ashes of anything that brings her down in life.
Sprytes friends, Co workers and fans describe her as a loving, rowdy, eccentric, creative, energetic force of nature.
Enjoy the Spirit of SPRYTE.
