Mantira (aka Andy Martin) began his musical journey into the world of dance at the tender age of 11. His older brother would roll in during the early hours waxing lyrical about the monstrous raves of the early 90’s and the wondrous new sounds that were to be found on the latest mix tape.
Fast forward to the mid 90's and a set of hallowed Technics 1210’s, that his brother had left behind in their parents attic whilst he went to work in Leeds, soon found themselves being practiced on religiously each and every night for the next 4 years as he expertly honed his deck skills.
The vinyl collection grew astronomically to keep pace with the constant practicing and it wasn't long before Andy was playing at the upstairs of the old riverside on Melbourne Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, no mean feat considering he wasn't even legally allowed to be in the place.
A two year residency at the infamous Sunday session Sunday trading in Newcastle soon followed and not long after a whole host of events such as Cause and Effect, Collaborative Northern Effort, Goodgreef, Kiddstock, Nice but Nasty and Freaky Dancing were all asking him to play.
With partner in crime Melt, Andy still finds time to co-promote one of Newcastle’s longest running and much loved events; ‘Detox’, which was born off the back of his own 21st birthday back in 2001, is an event that refuses to be pigeon holed whilst delivering an eclectic melting pot of everything from old school and acid techno through to techno, trance and hard dance.
Through these events, Andy has had the privilege of playing alongside and warming up for an impressive array of talent. To date he has lined up alongside Activa, Sean Tyas, Jon O’Bir, John ‘00’ Fleming, John Askew, K90, Amber D, Anne Savage, Ben Stevens, Bootek, Ed Real, Ellis Dee, Ephexis, Kutski, Lab 4, Lee Haslem, Lucy Fur, Mark Eg, N-JOI, Organ Donors, Paul Glazby, Proteus, Ratpack, Rob Tissera, Rodi Style, Shades of Rhythm, Slipmatt, Vinyl Groover and Yoji Biomehanika to name but a few.
Not content with just DJ’ing and running successful club events, Andy had spent the last 20 years filling his studio with countless productions more-so as a hobby than for any real desire to release any of his musical creations.
Musically, these productions drew inspiration from the original old skool and acid house rave era of the late 80’s and early 90’s plus the hedonistic hard house & trance years of the late 90’s and early noughties, citing his main musical influences as the likes of Carl Cox, The Prodigy, the late “great” Tony de Vit & Paul van Dyk.
Having grown ever more frustrated with a distinct lack of real quality productions to play in his DJ sets he recently decided to dust off some of the hidden gems from yesteryear and get to work fully re-mastering tracks that have never seen the light of day but which date back nearly a decade. Fast forward, and the first of these tracks "Metropolis" which has never even been sent off as a demo before (hard to believe for a DJ producer that has been playing out since the late 90s) has been instantly picked up by Aria Knights, with many more exciting and fresh productions in the pipeline this is the beginning of a new and exciting journey.
