Mandarones
Tartu
Mandarones is the instrumental compost rock ensemble founded in 2012 in Estonia. It encompasses the idea of musical freedom, as plain as it can get. The songs are largely based on jam sessions and that's where the band feels most comfortable at. One thing they promise, is that no two concerts will ever be the same neither for the guys playing nor the people listening. Mandarones tries to always keep a pleasant element of surprise in their gigs. Depending on the weather they might play anything from jazz to stoner metal and everything in between. The band has learned to listen to the audience and adjust to the surroundings. After all - their main goal is to spend some good times together.
In 2015 the band decided to go travelling and had a few gigs in the Netherlands and Switzerland. Before going on the journey they recorded what would later become their first album „Atomic warriors (Aatomisõdalased)“. Most of the songs were composed by their original guitarist Mart Volk, who is still lost in the great vastness of Europe. Since Tõnis wasn't around at that moment, they used Margo Saaremets on drums. They were also joined by Timo Petmanson on Keyboard, who became a regular member. The album came out in 2016 with the help of THC records.
After the trip things were slow for a while and the band underwent several line-up changes searching for their way. By trial and error they finally did find what they were looking for and since 2017 the band has had a redefined line-up, with Tanel Krinal, Tõnis Kärson Rait Pärnoja and Timo Petmanson. That helped them find their sound and defined more clearly every members' role in this great musical experiment.
The most concise description of their music would probably be the same that their great role model Led Zeppelin used about themselves. Their music is tight, but loose. Besides Zep' they list Janis Joplin, Black Sabbath, Velvet Underground, Graveyard, Radio Moscow as their inspirations. You can probably find elements of Primus, Gorillaz, Khruangbin and the list just keeps going. The idea of musical freedom is nothing new, but Mandarones has the ability to walk the fine line between interesting fusion and auditory chaos. Until the next jam again and again, my friends!
