Malphemist Brendan Armstrong Melbourne You want a neat little corporate approved genesis story? Go watch a Marvel movie. The world doesn't need another lame bio. I've played to festival crowds, little bars, empty rooms and galleries full of chin-stroking art nerds (ahh, my people). I love sound art and music so much I studied them for a while and even have a couple of shiny graduation certificates to prove it, which could come in handy if I ever run out of toilet paper. I once wrote a 7000 word thesis on the meaning of pink noise. No really, I'm told it's a real page turner. Sometimes I produce tracks, sometimes I DJ and sometimes I'll improvise live feedback drones with a home-made instrument comprised of hacked up Max patches, synths, mixers and distortion units. Once I even made my mates sit through an hour of pink noise, spatialised according to a swarming algorithm. Why? Because fractals are fucking awesome, that's why. Does any of this matter? It's all about the music and that's really all that matters. A person's taste in music says a lot about them in my experience. The astute observer can tease out your values and worldviews based on what you're listening to. Ultra-clean production? Insufferable idealist. Nothing but uplifting harmonies and melodies? Closet depressive. Vocals everywhere? Egotistical extravert. Endless cliches? Boring, trite and afraid of risks. Judges others based on their taste in music? Cunt. What does my music say about me? I believe that hyper-clean production is souless and boring. Give me some dirt, grit, imperfection and noise. I believe that music doesn't exist to make you feel good all the time. The human experience has a wide and nuanced emotional range and this should be reflected in our art. I believe that music speaks louder than words. Lyrics are an unnecessary distraction. I believe that true creativity, exploring the frontiers and pushing the boundaries, is the highest value we can aspire to. There's enough generic crap out there to fill a torture chamber for a thousand years, why add to it? I believe there are exceptions to all of the above because rules are there to be broken, but for fuck sake, make sure they are broken well. If you found this amusing rather than alienating, come say hello at my next gig. I'm a resident with the Rhythmic Shift crew - we take over sweet little bars in Melbourne and unleash our collective creativity on the unsuspecting people who wander in off the street and the occasional educated punter who appreciates a bit of breakbeat, rave, techno and electro.
