Audio essay by Magdaléna Manderlová, with voices by Katherine Butcher and Alex Murray-Leslie.
HISS is a work based on my field trip in the North Bohemian region in the Czech Republic, late September 2019, consisting of an artist book and an audio essay. My continuing interest in a landscape marked with anthropogenic activity made it a natural step to grab the area of the associated exhibition as a subject. The region has suffered from the coal mining industry for two centuries, which caused significant devastations and changes in the landscape. In one week, I engaged with the environment through walking - often writing as I was walking, recording at times, but mostly listening. I emphasized rhythms, spatial locations, finding relations and similarities in places that felt both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, as well as that I allowed myself to drift according to my thoughts and perceptions. I warmly invite the readers and listeners to linger in this alternative time and explore these spaces into new ecologies and personal constellations.
I walked through Bílina, Braňany, Černice, Duchcov, Jedovina, Lom u Mostu, Mariánské Radčice, Milada, Most, Osek, Roudníky, Trmice, Ústí nad Labem, Vršanská vyhlídka, Vysoká Pec.
Produced within The Earth/Current Way of Living group exhibition in Galerie Emila Filly, Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic, 4. December 2019 - 31. January 2020, curated by Tereza Zachová.
