Madrass band was formed in the autumn of 2007 in Budapest. At the beggining members were Boglárka Barkó (vocal), Szabolcs Dombó (drums), Balázs Dömötör (vocal), Attila Horváth (guitar), Tamás Hricsovinyi (bass guitar) and Bence Temesvári (violin). Then, in 2008 Gábor Gyõzõ changed Szabolcs on the drums. On 2009 Lóránt Kövi became the singer of the band. On 2010 Boglárka Barkó moved to abroad and she couldn’t undertake the further membership in the band. To her place we found the suitable descendant, Angyal Dorka. Substantive activity of the band begun in 2009 with the joining of Lóránt. New songs were born and the first gigs have happened which were followed by studio records in 2010 and 2011.
Members of the formation were not totally unknown for each other, some of them have already played together as the members of the A kert, the Nulladik Változat or the Flop. The members of the Madrass have significant musician backround.
A record from 2006 can be considered an importent premise of the Madrass band, which was recorded in honour of Bob Zoltán (the singer of the A Kert), who died an early death. This song, called Lélekvadász was sung by the singer of The Perfect Name, however the other musicians were more or less the same as the present membership of the Madrass. The sound engineer of the Lélekvadász was Hidasi Barnabás, the previous keyboard player of the A Kert, who has supported the band further on. The characteristics of the song (long instrumental parts, a bit orientalistic melody-leading, sometimes dynamic rock drums) have remained the features of the band further on.
It’s not easy to define the musicial style of the Madrass. Maybe it’s classifiable to the folk-rock music but we don’t mean at all folk-songs performed by electric instruments on it. The sounding of the Madrass quotes the rock bands, but the construction of the tracks, the role of the electric violin and that’s versatile usage and the rhythms are so colorful. As a speciality in some tracks apperas a stringed instrument, which is the peculiar mix of the sitar and electric guitar. The violon, which usually plays solo is built on the harder bases. The two head vocalist and the intensive polyphonic back vocal compose accentuated part of the music of the Madrass. Lyrics are related partly the free roving of the soul, partly the earth-bound reality of the body.
The members of the Madrass have arrived from different musical sytle bands, but maybe the common point could be the interest towards folk music, which gives a flavour to the songs composed together, and can be noticed in the melodies and in the lyrics. Of course, our music could be compared with other formation’s music, but choosing of these would be entrusted to the audience. Our task should be making music instead of ruminating about that.
Choosing of the name „Madrass” has happened by accident. Madras is an Indian city (it’s called the southern gate of India), and it’s also the name of the colorful halfsilk which is made there. The name of the band refers this, from he first momentum we tought the choosing of the name till this. We would like to dispence with deep psychological explanations, but for those who like things like this we could tell that „madras” means rug in Norwegian and with the use of vodka and strawberry a similar name cocktail can be made. Loan translation of the band is the „mad” + „rass” constitution.
In the spring of 2011 the Madrass has recorded a studio album with 10 tracks, the title is „Vihar után”. Mixing the album has finished in the summer, turnout has happened in the middle of October 2011.
