There is a special kind of magic happening when singer Anna Lundqvist and pianist Jonas André play together – a communication of a near telepathic nature. After a break for almost two decades, the duo comes together again to record their debut album this winter, with a release scheduled for mid 2020.
The music flows seamlessly between European jazz and pop, where original material intertwines with songs by, for instance, Joni Mitchell, Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Alexander Lövmark, Anders von Hofsten, and Jay-Jay Johansson. Melancholic harmony and drama are the key elements that make up the profound and honest repertoire with lyrics about life, passion, and will.
It was 20 years ago, when they both studied at Skurup’s Folk High School, that they played together for the first time. And despite coming from different musical backgrounds, they quickly realised they had a special kind of musical chemistry. However, life and further studies made them decide to pause the duo indefinitely. But the will to play together never went away, and now the duo has been revived to develop that chemistry and to make new music.
Anna Lundqvist – celebrated singer and composer. She has studied at the Jazz programme at Skurup’s Folk High School, and has been active in music for 20 years. During that time she has released five critically acclaimed albums and published a book with original compositions. The last album, MEWE (Anna Lundqvist Quintet, 2018), was nominated in the Jazz of the Year category at the Swedish independent music award Manifest. The album received high praise in foreign press and media. Since a few years back, she is also active as a musician and lecturer in Lisbon, Portugal – a city she calls her second home.
Jonas André – musician and cultural all-rounder. He has studied at the Jazz programme at Skurup’s Folk High School and at the Malmö Academy of Music. Over the last 25 years he has been part of several musical projects – as a musician, producer, and graphic designer. He produced a number of albums during his time at the government funded Caprice Records label – for instance the debut album of Swedish singer Edda Magnason, and the highly appreciated recording series Improvisational (piano improvisations by Jacob Karlzon, Mats Öberg, among others). He is also active as an art director and photographer.
