Loïc Bléjean is a Breton uilleann pipes and low whistle player. Deeply rooted in Irish traditional music, he is also a very versatile musician and has taken part in a great variety of projects over the last twenty-five years.
He started with the pipes in 1989 under the tuition of Alain Le Hegarat, and then traveled extensively in Ireland, where he met and was influenced by many great musicians, in particular piper Brendan Ring. In 1996, he shared the stage with fiddler Paul Flynn and singer/guitar player David Muldrew for the first of three residencies at McGurk's, the legendary Irish venue in St. Louis, Missouri.
His adaptability kept him busy, whether working in recording studios or touring major festivals during the nineties, when he was member of influential bands (Breton pop-rock "Glaz", French Canadian "Gwazigan"). In 2007 he joined fest-noz super-group Carré Manchot, bringing the irish pipes to the lively tradition of breton dance music.
In 2009, Gay McKeon invited him to play for the "Session with the Pipers" concert series at the Cobblestone in Dublin, and he performed at the William Kennedy International Piping Festival in Armagh, with his younger brother Ronan (button accordion). He played again at those two events in 2013, this time with New York concertina player Louisa Bennion, after a U.S. tour earlier in that year.
Always seeking diversity in his musical experiences, he is currently working with jazz musicians Gildas & JB Boclé, in the exciting Keltic Tales Quartet. A new album, freshly recorded in NYC and Brittany, will be released in 2014. Loïc also tours and records with composer Hervé Lesvenen’s orchestral ensemble "Ars'Ys".
A more personal project is on its way, combining irish trad with many influences….
Meanwhile, Loïc tours as a solo artist (concerts, workshops, master classes) or in duets with his brother Ronan (accordeon), with London-born Tad Sargent (bouzouki, bodhrán, vocals), or with New York concertina player Louisa Bennion.
In his village of Tréméven on the north coast of Brittany, Loïc and his brother founded Irish Rendez Vous Music Festival, promoting irish traditional music at its very best since 2009.
