Train Journey Musical Soundscape by Liam Lacey published on 2010/06/11 17:03:54 +0000 A university project for a module entitled 'Sonic Art and Sound Design'. The project involved the composition and production of a musical soundscape inspired by self-made film footage of a train journey between Cardiff and Newport in South Wales, UK. The music was designed to sonically represent the journey and the different environments that it takes you through by using audio modification techniques and compositional characteristics. Most of the audio used to create the music comprised of self-recorded sounds relating to trains and the environment, therefore the main challenge of the project was to create a convincing piece of music just using these recordings. The recorded sounds were manipulated and edited in different ways in order to create interesting and desired sounds that sonically complement the video footage. Self-recorded audio that was used included train related sounds, rural/country sounds, and urban/city sounds. Some of the recorded audio was heavily manipulated and modified to create musical elements such as melody, harmony, bass, and rhythm, whereas other audio stayed relatively natural and unedited and used as sound effects and more direct representations of the environments in the video.
