Lex Da Funk
Since moving to Chicago from Romania at age 17, Lex Da Funk has dropped his brand of techy, progressive house beats to audiences across the city and across the world. What began as residency at Chicago’s intimate Martini Ranch has evolved into a production and performance career that takes influence from the likes of Bad Boy Bill, Mixin Marc and Alex Peace, to name a few.
“I am always experimenting with new sounds”, says Lex, who started his music career at only eight years old. Classically trained on piano and violin, he arrived in Chicago in the year of 2000 with love for trance and dance music. Soon after, the thriving scenes embodied by clubs such as Spybar and Crobar guided him in a new creative direction. “Chicago house changed my life,” says Lex, who, inspired by the nightly beats, realized he wanted to make music instead of just spin it. By the time he was 19, Lex had launched his own studio with only a laptop and a pair of headphones.
By 2007, Lex was producing his chunky, tribal grooves among Chicago’s top house music talent. Original releases on Mixin Marc’s Movement Music, Tom Stephan’s Chumbomundo, Roger Sanchez’s Stealth Records and Robbie Rivera’s Juicy Music labels brought Lex’s sound to the forefront of Chicago house music audiences. Additional releases on Cr2 Records (Mark Brown MYNC Project) and the esteemed Ultra Records flaunt the chunky, vibe that Lex works best.
“I was always attracted to the word “funk”, muses Lex. “Funky clothes, funky music, funky lifestyle” in a few words, I’m always searching for something “different,” he says.
More recently, that search has led him to international gigs at Portugal’s Club Espinho, New York’s Club Cielo and Chicago dance institutions such as Spybar, Soundbar, Crobar and Level.
In addition to past original tracks and remix work, Lex continues to his established relationship with Chicago’s mainstay producers. Today he is roster member of Chicago’s celebrated Menage Management Collective.
“Music itself drives me to continue my music production” it will always be a part of my lifestyle. As long as it’s different, it will always be better"
