Anne Leighton believes that artists can work within their own means by creating their own career opportunities. And she has done that for herself via her love of mass media, as a writer, publicist and a music services person.
After a five year career in commercial radio, which included WBUZ-Fredonia, WZIR-Buffalo, WRNW-Briarcliff Manor, she began writing articles for GOLDMINE and BUFFALO's NIGHTLIFE. This led to a nine year stint as an editor at HIT PARADER magazine, where she also wrote for ROCK & SOUL, and freelanced for a variety of publications including THE MUSIC PAPER, MUSIC LIFE JAPAN, INSIDE KUNG FU, MUSCLEMAG INTERNATIONAL.
As she wrote, she also helped local bands find shows and get into the media, and became a music publicist. She's worked with a variety of classic artists, including Jethro Tull (since 1998), Grand Funk Railroad and Stratospheerius (since 2001), Tower of Power and Jann Klose (since 2004), Carl Palmer (since 2006), Cevin Soling and the love kills theory (since 2007), the Fabulous Thunderbirds (since 2008), and Jessie Galante, and the Yardbirds and Jim McCarty (since 2010)
Some of her publicity accounts--Jann Klose, Jessie Galante, and Joe Deninzon and Stratospheerius are also administrative clients, meaning she handles detail work in many aspects of their casreers. These relationships gives her the opportunity to branch into all the exciting aspects of the music business, plus new territories.
Of her own art, she is an active writer, sometimes performing her works live, most notably at New York City's Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Anne performed her poem, "Feed Your Parents Well" on the Grammy-nominated album, HEALTHY FOOD FOR THOUGHT (East Coast Recording Company).
She was active at the Hidden Treasures Series in the Bronx, won the Jason Hamer playwriting competition for her play SIMPLE LIE-A FLY, which has been read in San Antonio's Living River Church and at New York City's Howl Festival. Her 1976 play, REACH FOR THE SUN was performed at Poets Repertory Theatre of Long Island, and a recent three act play, THE PASSION OF MARY was read at the Kingsbridge Library Center in the Bronx, in 2010. She is the author of three books--her most recent, MY BRAIN, THE PARK AND OTHER THINGS is due in July.
