Water For The Spirits by LAPKAT published on 2015-11-03T00:03:01Z Made in response to Claudia Wegner's Radio Continental Drift project, "The Women of the Great River". The voices of Janet Mwindii and Luyando Muyalali from Damba, "rites of passage", and song from Christine Ester and Mtenda. Samples and rhythms made from water, and from the sounds recorded by Claudia under the Siachilaba Baobab, and Tusimpe All Souls Mission, Binga. My first track created exclusively in Ableton, a captured moment of experimentation and learning Some background on "The People of the Great River": The BaTonga are descendants of those who were forcefully removed from their fertile land at the Zambezi by the British Colonial Government in the 1950s. They had to escape into the arid, higher regions both sides of the Zambezi valley where agriculture is almost impossible. The land of their ancestors is now at the bottom of the Kariba Lake. Even after independence, water and electricity from the dam bypasse them serving others in the country. "Having lost everything their culture survives strongly as a driving force of self-assertion, resilience and development." I’m listening with amazement to your skillful, multilayered sonic storytelling. With a gift of deep listening, you’ve grasped much about the history and culture of the Tonga people, and now retelling it in a way that I’d think will open the ears of many more listeners to the rich heritage of these marginalized people in Zimbabwe. This is a beautiful gift! Thank you in the name of “the women of the great river”! 2015-11-06T21:30:26Z
