When You're Next to Me by kylelyons published on 2013/02/15 01:06:24 +0000 Happy Valentine's Day! When my wife recently and reluctantly agreed to watch Christopher Guest's A Mighty Wind, I have to admit that I was nervous. This is one of my favorite films, and almost certainly my favorite of Guest's offerings (a competitive market if there ever was). If she saw it and hated it or, worse yet, recognized the humor but remained indifferent I would have been crushed. My fears were in vain and she took to the cinematic sweethearts Mitch and Mickey like, I don't know, some thing to another... thing. While all the songs in the film satirize folk music and it's tropes, this self-aware, sickly sweet track caught her attention and she suggested we cover it to celebrate Valentine's Day this year. While I was pulling for something with gravitas like "Skeletons of Quinto" or "Corn Wine," the strength of her singular consciousness prevailed. While, honestly, I don't think that the power of our love will rid the world of decay and usher in an age of peace and prosperity as the song imagines, there are worse things to hope and sing for. If nothing else, I hope that it brightens your day!
