Oakland Police Mark 5 Years Since One of Deadliest Days for Calif. Law Enforcement by KQED published on 2014/03/22 03:07:45 +0000 Five years ago today, a traffic stop in East Oakland turned fatal when parolee Lovelle Mixon shot and killed two police officers, and during the ensuing manhunt also killed two members of the department’s SWAT team. Police later fatally shot Mixon. Today’s anniversary comes as Oakland searches for yet another police chief to head a department that’s had a history of poor community relations. KQED's Tara Siler talks about that relationship with Olis Simmons, president of Youth Uprising, a neighborhood hub next to Oakland’s Castlemont High School. It offers a range of services and a safe place for young people to come together.
