My uncle Ray had ties to Al Green back in the day. They used to sing together so having him around the family was cool. I wrote my first song at ten years old but it wasn't until high school that I got serious about it," says Black. Once upon of time Black was in a rap group, going from school to school, from hood to hood in New York winning battles and then eventually switched it up by singing. Singing just spoke to him more. "During lunch time while they were rapping I'd slide in smooth with the hook. It won the girls every time lol" To add to his singing Kofi was the go to guy when it came to making beats in high school and still is to this day. Like most of the greats; Kofi is completely self-taught on the piano, drums and bass guitar, which are heard throughout his music.
