KJZZ 2019 Continuing Coverage - Arizona Teacher Strike by KJZZ Phoenix published on 2019-02-01T23:32:22Z For two months straight, KJZZ followed teachers through an explosion of unpredictable news events. Coverage began with explaining the powder keg of dismal funding teachers have faced for a decade, then continued to “walk-ins” where teachers protested outside of classrooms. When 50,000 teachers went on strike, the largest in state history, KJZZ reporters marched alongside them for 2 miles to get the best reporting and sound. As the strike stretched on, KJZZ ensured coverage in far-flung places like the Navajo Nation and rural Arizona. We also had live hits daily from the state Capitol where the strike was ongoing. And, KJZZ produced several feature-length pieces during the strike featuring voices that would have gone unheard if reporters had only stayed at the Capitol. Finally, once the strike was over, KJZZ continued to report how the effects of the strike and budget played out in school districts many months later.
