With K-pop's popularity at its peak, Kill The DJs — a NYC-based DJ/production duo — presents "K-Pop For Lovers," a 20-track mix offering a refreshing take on the glitzy genre. In a surprising move, KTDJs selects tracks from acts such as Big Bang and Wonder Girls to pair them up with indie and retro-leaning sounds, and what comes forth is bubblegum pop with dance-rock, disco, R&B, reggae, underground bass, hip-hop, and abstract beats twists. You've never heard 2NE1 over a Ryan Paris Italo groover, or Brown Eyed Girls on top of The Knocks' reworking of a Santigold heater. As the cool, sexy vibe continues, KTDJs complements the "Love" theme by peppering in vintage film (Korean, of course) quotes, an approach that adds to the quirky undertones prevalent throughout the mix.
If the first half of "K-Pop For Lovers" is fun and dance oriented, the second half is blue and chilled out. KTDJs enlists remixes that flip the upbeat originals into smooth — at times atmospheric — head nodders, and for fans that have come to expect a certain sound from the likes of Girls Generation or GD & Top, the tracks should prove to be a breath of fresh air.
The verdict? You'll either love or hate "K-Pop For Lovers" (I'm leaning toward the former), but any music aficionado will appreciate the amount of ground KTDJs covers (really, where else will you hear Taeyang, Dumbfounded, The Magician, Kush, Justin Timberlake, Dynamic Duo, Classixx, The Glass, and Sublime together?). Just looking at the artwork is telling of the range of interests, both musical and lifestyle wise, KTDJs owns up to. Listen to it, dance to it, and kick back to it. "K-pop For Lovers" is for lovers of all things.
