Behind_My_Living (2013) excerpt 2 by Michael_Lau published on 2014-04-07T08:49:34Z ‘Behind My Living’ explores the concept of ‘cites within cities’, which is my recent compositional research and approach. I feel fascinated about the idea of subcultural identities in large cities and how they shape not only their global image, but also the sonic environment where we are living. Manchester is an clear example of cultural crossroads. In this piece I explore China Town and the Curry Mile, which are geographically connected via Oxford Road, a terrestrial vertebrate with two universities that will become the largest Low Carbon Laboratory in Europe. These two strong international communities in Manchester, provide the cross-cultural source and sonic environment for my composition, while the connecting pipeline is represented by sonic excerpts of Tom Kilburn (Kilburn Building on Oxford Road); a British engineer and academic who contributed to the development of the world's first stored-computer program in Manchester University.
