TITLE: Variazioni della quotidianità / Fragments of reality.
THEME: History + Conflict + Dream + Failure = Home.
(Originally composed for BJCEM Mediterranea 18 Young Artists Biennale – call for artists 2017).
Noises from the cities, sounds from the houses. Atmospheres, smells and emotions translated into sonic fragments. A recording journey into the private and public dimension of Milan, Naples, Berlin and Copenhagen to catch and represent everyday life breaths, catching noises and specific atmospheres, traducing smells and emotions into sounds. For this composition I recorded sounds representing the house and everything that it evokes.
I tried to put together all these raw atoms into an “unicum sonoro” through techniques of modal and granular synthesis and field recording, processed into pure sounds.
Noises from traffic, slums, trains and stations, markets, the sound of the wind, the sea and the seagulls, the night enchanting silence; different voices coming from different cultures and from refugees’ shelters; people crying, sighing, the TV talking, the water boiling, people laughing and argueing. The conflict is evident in everyday’s life; the Mediterranean area and more in general populations and cultures are more and more fragmented. For necessity, for luck, for ambition, for insatisfaction or for escaping from ourselves, we are always switching from a city to another one, from a culture to another culture, a culture that’s becoming more and more bulimic, absorbing everything and rejecting everything a moment later, holding more subcultures and shades at the same time. In this context, the house gains a more abstract meaning: a mood, a sensation and not a physical condition of space. We can feel at home everywhere, if there are the ideas of community, proximity to others, sharing of everyday life and love, family, union, happiness. At the same time, we can’t feel at home – even being in the physical place understood as such – if there are traumas, emptiness, absence or a latent melancholy.
