Karmafauna

Karmafauna is an electronic music duo featuring Singer, Songwriter & Musician Robert Lee Fardoe and Producer/Musician Julian Laping (aka Toneaffair).  Having studied World Music in London, Fardoe came to Berlin in 2007, playing in several music projects and teaching music to refugees in the subsequent years. In 2010 Fardoe met Laping in Lux, a nightclub wich is part of the legendary district 36 of Kreuzberg. Laping had been involved in diverse projects from composing film music, producing electronic music to playing drums/keyboard in various bands.   The Lux Club became a local hang-out for the pair as they discussed music and deliberated over working together. Eventually they began recording their debut album “Birds & Apes” in a makeshift studio above Lux in Autumn 2014.   The recording process was unique in the sense that they wrote most of the songs in the studio - from scratch, “jamming” out ideas in the morning and having an almost complete song laid down by the afternoon. Laping would then work on the sound design as Fardoe wrote his “social commentary” lyrics in a quiet corner of the empty bar. With this visceral and instinctive way of working, an album full of verve, color and unexpected twists was created.    Karmafauna’s live shows are also something to be seen and heard in equal measures. Fardoe mixes live guitar, voice and other instruments onto Laping´s thumping Groovebox beats and pumping electro-percussion. Sometimes programmed, sometimes improvised, every Karmafauna performance is unique.  In 2015, Karmafauna will bring these tracks alive on the stage, inviting you to share in the transcendent, sonic journey. They make music not just for the people, but with them.
