Livro de Órgão Ibérico (Iberian Organ Book) was composed to be performed preferably (but not exclusively) in an organ with the typical characteristics of Portuguese and Spanish organs (divided keyboards, short octave, horizontal reeds). These 5 virtuosity etudes that compose this work are based in a Gregorian theme, as well as in the historical tradition of the Portuguese organ music.
1) Meio-registo de Clarins de Mão Esquerda (Half-register With Trumpets in the Left Hand). Based in the opposition of two registers, one of them softer (almost like and accompaniment), and the other very virtuosistic, using horizontal reeds.
2) Tento. The Iberian equivalent of the Ricercare. Imitative piece, also using the division of the keyboard.
3) Glosa (Variation). Piece based on ornamented variations of the theme. In this etude is also explored the possibility of having the main register without fundamentals, using only the high partials in the mixtures.
4) Verso (Verse). Ornamented piece used to be played in the responsorial.
5) Batalha (Battle). The typical virtuosity piece of the Iberian tradition. Originally it is a descriptive work, imitating the sounds of a battle. Uses all the possibilities of the organ.
