DJing should be about narrating with music that engages an audience. Striking a balance between what the crowd wants and what they don’t expect on different levels within the music.
Starting at a young age Josh first used whatever he could get his hands on. He took over his parents stereo and started experimenting at small parties. Later, vinyl and CDJs, came into play, before Traktor was added. This presented him with almost unlimited creative possibilities behind the decks and is regularly alternated with CDJ’s.
Musical inspiration came from artists like Mark Farina, James Zabiela, N U, Melon, Jean Michel Jarre, and Gilles Peterson. Also labels like Monaberry, Chopshop, Laut Und Luise, and his own KROOKS label moved his musical taste forward, as well as friends like Andreas Henneberg, Satori and Daniel Zuur. With these influences different styles and genre came and went, but they all left a distinct mark on his funk-fueled positive avant-garde sound.
Whether it’s Brazilian 70’s funk, modern takes on early Disco, rolling house rhythms or slow melodic Berlin techno, all music can be put together into a narrative that moves. He’s always trying to find new ways to blend techniques and genres into a beautifully compelling story.
Supporting his career in music has always been the involvement with music in a broader sense, ranging from small parties to big festivals like Free Your Mind festival in the Netherlands. In 2015 he joined KROOKS music label in Amsterdam to bring more depth into a scene that can be very shallow. The likes of Satori, Arjuna Schiks and Spaceandtime, have released on the label and in doing so extended their creative scope in new directions.
