217 Years of Constitutional History in 110 Minutes by Josh Blackman

For my final class of the semester of Federal Court Practice (April 2011), I gave the students an intensive lecture, taking them on a tour of over 300 Supreme Court cases decided over two centuries, and explored how studying the Court chronologically yields certain trends and patterns that are difficult to perceive studying topics separately. In the future, I would love to transform this lecture into an entire class, and actually assign many of these opinions to discuss over the course of a semester. Students would learn constitutional law unlike ever before. John Harlan taught the Constitution sequentially, clause by clause, starting from Article I. Shouldn’t constitutional law be taught the same way?
