In the 1922 treatise, Harmonielehre, Schönberg stated that the current tuning system, or equal temperament, is a “temporary station” or “closed truce” (“geschlossener Waffenstillstand”) that will have to be re-evaluated in terms of the natural intervals of the overtone series. In reference to this quote, the piece is a distinct juxtaposition of sections comprising harmony whose tuning is either “natural” (just intonation) or equal tempered, thus resulting in differences in beating patterns, clarity of subtones and harmonics, and other acoustic phenomena.
