Dr. Joseph has played with the likes of Jane Fitz, Helena Hauff, Ben UFO, Robert Hood, Daniel Avery, Objekt, Dax J and many more. As Skew-Whiff founder and Ape-X resident, his loyal local reputation in the North of England has encouraged a growing international touring schedule, with recent gigs in Belgrade, Tokyo, Seoul, Hanoi, Chengdu, Melbourne and beyond. A techno hypnotist & record obsessive in search of those heads down & sweaty techno stompers, brazen break beat, rancid acid and tripping electro, his diverse record collection and bold approach flourish at all times of day & night. Peak-time sets at Jane Fitz & Jade Seattle’s Night Moves tent at Field Maneuevrs Festival, Gazette Club in Romania and the legendary Jaded at Corsica Studios sit alongside deeper after-hours on the rooftops of New York City or opening for Intergalactic Gary at Rural Festival’s afterparty in Japan. Dr. Joseph’s seemingly unstoppable determination to learn the intricacies and challenge the outer limits of the world’s dance floors is becoming fulfilled.
His monthly KMAH Radio residency “Skew-Whiff” challenges him and his guests to dig for the most daring records they can find, further fuelling the unique surprises he can offer the dance-floor. It has now grown into a party of its own, with Dr. Joseph welcoming Objekt, Batu, Paula Temple & Courtesy to Cosmic Ballroom in the next few months alone.
Eager to further his knowledge and contribute to this culture which binds us, alongside the rest of the Backdrop crew he curated and organised a panel discussion and charitable party entitled “Sounds Of Solidarity: Power & Politics of Dance Music” earlier this year. Saoirse, SIREN & Room 4 Resistance Berlin collectives were all speaking and DJing afterwards within Cosmic Ballroom, Newcastle. This was aimed at discussing and improving diversity within electronic music, creating safer dance floors and venues for all and especially women, those of non-binary gender, LGBTIQ communities and ethnic minorities.
As a music journalist for backdroplive.com and drjosephmusic.com, he has carefully curated a podcast series from the likes of Santiago Salazar, Shinra, Bas Amro, Carl H and many more as well as in-depth features with Objekt, Saoirse, Honey Soundsystem & others. An insatiable appetite for club culture is also behind his upcoming“Sonic Sanctuary” series where he investigates the world’s most dedicated, underground nightclubs, speaking with resident DJs, long-standing guests, loyal dancers and programmers from clubs as diverse as The Pickle Factory (London) to No Way Back Detroit.
