Addicted to Death (Nastrand) by Devourer published on 2017-04-01T14:32:52Z Addicted to Death was written and recorded by me, Steinfaust (Devourer, ex-Sorcery, ex-In Aeternum), while I was locked up in rehab due to the Swedish law of mandatory treatment for abusers and alcoholics. The treatment had a music room equipped with a drum set, guitar, bass, one 25-watt amplifier, a 4-channel digital recorder and one microphone. After quite a long search for the right spot to put that one microphone in I found one that captured the whole drum set evenly, and then in the mixing stage I had to be inventive to make them sound like they do on this recording. I wasn't allowed to access the internet but after nagging on the staff for a while I was at last allowed to download some free mixing software so I could mix the tracks on the computer that was available to me there. When the six months of treatment was over I mastered the recording in my home studio. To pass the time I read about ancient Scandinavian religion and got the name Nastrand from there. Nastrand means corpse shore and is a place in Hel where Níðhöggr lives and chews on corpses. The lyrics are related to both the situation I was in and the stuff I was reading about. The title, Addicted to Death, is a reflection of my mood at the time. I was seriously depressed, addicted to drugs and had a lot of suicidal thoughts. After getting out of treatment it was very nice to get to use my own equipment again. It didn't take long until I contacted Crocell and we started working on a new Devourer album and since then Nastrand has been just a memory of a very challenging time in my life. I don't know if or when I'll make another Nastrand recording, but it isn't precluded that I sometime will.
