Boca do Inferno - Episódio 1 - Uma introdução cronológica ao death metal português (1993-2003) by Joao Capela published on 2021-08-14T02:36:15Z Despite the large portuguese community in Fall River and surrounding areas, and some people's interest in heavy metal, portuguese extreme metal is still largely unheard of among local metalheads. With that in mind, I decided to record a podcast that may serve as an introduction to portuguese death metal and its history. The evolution of death metal in Portugal started relatively late compared to other countries like the UK and the United States, where the genre solidified between the mid and late 80's. In fact, besides some demo tapes from the late 80's by bands like Braindead, Thormenthor and Massacre that showed a rudimentary sound that hinted at death metal, it was only in the early nineties that a few proper death metal bands started popping up and the first death metal album was only released in '93 by Sacred Sin. Despite the fact that a small scene existed since the early 90's, there were very few record labels and none of them would risk releasing a death metal album. This made the scene stay truly underground, relying only in tape-trading, zines and pirate radios. This situation started changing in the mid-nineties, when a small number of independent record labels were created. In the meantime, the scene expanded and nowadays there are several bands in activity, festivals dedicated to extreme metal in the country, and some of the bands like Grog, Holocausto Canibal and Analepsy are recognized internationally. This podcast episode aims to showcase the bands that started it all, paving the way to the present portuguese death metal scene. Genre Metal
