London/New York/Santa Fe
Jamie Russell was born in Brighton, England. He was three when his mother. Pamela, met up with her childhood friend, Gary Windo. After a brief courtship, the two married and moved the family to London, where Jamie grew up in the diverse music scene his step-father was involved in; From avant-garde jazz and prog-rock, to rock’n’roll—from Robert Wyatt, Nick Mason, Robert Fripp, Gary Glitter, and Chris MacGregor's South African band, "The Brotherhood of Breath". When Margaret Thatcher became prime minister in 1977 , Jamie’s step-father, Gary, said, "It's time to leave England!!!!". Gary had been playing european shows with American jazz composer Carla Bley, and she wanted Gary to come to the U.S and tour., After leaving London , the Windo family went first to Brooklyn N.Y, and then on to Woodstock, N.Y..
Jamie had began playing drums as a child; on a set that had belonged to Keith Moon, given to Robert Wyatt of Soft Machine, and then on to Jamie via the family music room in Highgate, North London.
In the very cold winters of upstate New York, Jamie started drumming seriously......... !
Jamie says "I was lucky. Gary would take me into to the studio when he was recording; from Carla's studio,Grogkill to Todd Rundgren's Mink Hollow
I’d sometimes get impromptu lessons from incredible drummers like Prairie Prince, Andrew Cyrille, D Sharpe, and the great Jack DeJohnette.".
At the age of fifteen, Jamie was playing with local Woodstock bands, including his mum’s recently signed band—Pam Windo & The Shades (Bearsville/Warner) to his own new wave Paris Plus, then also playing with Suzi Ronson; wife of guitar legend Mick Ronson, which then led Jamie to play with Mick too....
In 1990, Jamie moved to L.A, playing, for a time, in what was a "full on" heavy metal scene.
In 1992, Gary Windo passed away from a long time illness. Jamie recalls: "I’d been playing guitar for a few years, but after Gary died, I started writing. I found it healing."
“I was playing around town at the Rainbow Room, Gaslight, etc. playing with Phil Lewis from L.A Guns, and with Brian Setzer".
A year later, and with shorter hair, Jamie moved back to New York City.
When his step-father Gary Windo was signed to Island Records, and was putting a band together to tour, he chose Jamie to play drums, alongside guitarist Knox Chandler and cellist Ann Sheldon. "We played some great shows. It was an amazing feeling to be playing in my step-father’s band.
In 1992 Gary Windo passed away from a long time illness. Jamie recalls: "I’d been playing guitar for a few years, but after Gary died, I started writing. I found it healing."
Jamie was living on New York’s Lower East Side. He was writing songs, and playing at places like Diana's, Sidewalk Café and Sin-e. In 1993, things took a different direction, "I was doing window design w/ the team at Bergdorf Goodman in New York when I met Philip Treacy , hat designer for Chanel, Valentino, and Versace, as well as celebrities like Lady Gaga, Grace Jones, and Boy George.....,
Later that year, Philip invited Jamie to work with him in London....
"It was strange to be back in the U.K. after fifteen years away; I took my guitar with me and continued to write.”
Jamie's first solo album , “Fragility”, was released on January 1st, 2012.
Jamie says , "I put the album out on that specific date because I felt it was it was the start of something new. It took a long time to make, and the album was a real learning process for me; I wanted to get the best possible sound with every instrument" .
At the end of 2012, after performing shows around London, and the U.K at large, Jamie decided to head "Out West" and found himself in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where his mother, Pamela Windo, had been living for a few years.....
Armed with a lot of new songs, and ready to record , Jamie got set to make his second album "Santa Fe Sessions". Released in February of 2014, the first single "The Flame", and the second "Sweet Chariot ft. Felecia Ford, was well received .....
The album is available on iTunes , Amazon mp3, Spotify, X-Box Live, Rhapsody etc..........
