Jamie Odell aka Jimpster and Franc Spangler has been producing, remixing and DJing for over 23 years and next year the esteemed UK deep house label he runs with Tom Roberts; Freerange Records, will be celebrating their 20th birthday and have just reached their 200th release. More recently he set up Delusions Of Grandeur as an outlet for slightly more underground and raw tracks introducing and helping to establish artists such as 6th Borough Project, Tornado Wallace and Session Victim. His musical upbringing and very early introduction to production (his first release was on influential UK label Jumpin’ & Pumpin’ in 1990 alongside labelmates Future Sound Of London) have helped him forge a sound that is both warm and deep as well as being innovative and club friendly, a style which is naturally reflected in the releases on his labels.
His seminal Jimpster LP Messages From The Hub (1997), as well as his early dancefloor orientated Audiomontage 12”s really helped establish Jamie as an artist of some merit and he quickly became in regular demand as a remixer (almost 100 at the last count!) and co-producer on a wide range of underground projects including Ninjatune’s Coldcut and Kirk Degiorgio’s As One. His third Jimpster LP Amour was released 8 years ago on Freerange to excellent critical acclaim and appeared in numerous published Top 20 LP's of the year charts. In more recent years he has released his first original track for an outside label, choosing Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly for Square Up which went on to become a big underground house track of the year. His most recent LP Porchlight And Rocking Chairs included the single These Times ft. Jinadu, another deep house anthem which received support from many of the best house DJ’s out there, and went on to be remixed by Dixon and Manuel Tur to serious effect. Not to mention KiNK’s incredible remix of Porchlight And Rocking Chairs which became one of the biggest, most ubiquitous underground hits of 2013.
When it comes to remixing Jimpster is widely regarded as one of the best in deep house. More recently he’s impressed when putting his midas touch to artists such as Detroit Swindle, Till Von Sein, Paxton Fettel, Da Posse, S-Man and Michel Cleis. If we dig in the vaults you can find a whole plethora of classic remixes for the likes of Josh Wink, Osunlade, Bob Marley, Joris Voorn, Seal, Marc Romboy, Solomun and Kollektiv Turmstrasse, and that’s without even scraping the surface.
Over the past 15 years Jamie has built up a reputation as a highly regarded DJ in the UK and around the world, with a boundless energy and enthusiasm for discovering new music and partying which never fails to shine wherever and whenever he plays. If you know his A & R approach for Freerange and Delusions Of Grandeur then you have an idea what you can expect from his sets. Or check out his Freerange Boiler Room takeover set alongside Mic Newman, Nebraska and Detroit Swindle. With an emphasis on the deeper end of electronic house and disco, but not afraid to stray from the path, he retains an old school approach that has seen him booked for gigs as diverse as Fabric and Corisca Studios (London), Panorama Bar and Watergate (Berlin), Smart Bar (Chicago), Air (Tokyo), Zoo Project (Ibiza), D-Edge (Sao Paulo), GOA (Madrid) and Sonar By Night (Barcelona).
He continues to present the Freerange Radioshow each month which is syndicated to over thirty FM stations, regularly tops worldwide listenership polls and has helped establish Freerange and Jimpster as household names in less obvious DJ territories such as South Africa and Africa.
