AKKUraatd podcast 1 - Proctoring by Jelle Verploegen published on 2020-05-25T12:18:49Z Online examining must not be at the expense of the right of privacy Sanne Liefers, #11 on the electoral list, and Bart Zonneveld, current USC member, explain the election point above. AKKUraatd believes that the online exams cannot damage the privacy of students. At the moment, the university is looking for option to take exams online, and one of the systems on the table for this is online proctoring. This system observes the student and his room through artificial intelligence and collects data of students for an unknown period, so proctoring is harmful for the student’s privacy on multiple levels. But also the use of Zoom is debatable, for that program is not privacy proof too. AKKUraatd want the university to look at these methods of online examination very critically and to come up with safe alternatives. Bart says that during a period of crisis, as with the corona crisis, people tend to reach at heavy measures without really thinking them through. As privacy is a difficult, less tangible subject, it is easier to look over when thinking about solutions for examination. But it is really important to take a step back and also pay attention to the right of privacy. And there are alternatives: the Radboud Centre for Teaching and Learning advises teachers in methods of examining and teachers do come up with own ideas. For example, the Faculty of Law said they will not use surveillance software whilst taking exams, instead applying own solutions. Sanne thinks that the fact that exams are predominantly testing reproductive knowledge contributes to the need of surveillance software, as this kind of knowledge is very prone to fraud. Students can just look these facts up in their textbook. Sanne thinks it is important to test the students’ insight with essay questions, because you cannot complete these with just looking in your book. This would perhaps partly solve the problem.
