The Miscellaneous Experiment’s:
One Hundred Seconds Building Confidence - Part 3: It All Starts With You
Once you begin to earn your own respect, and to feel a little better about yourself, you’ll realize how much of a shame it has been for you to have remained in that spot for so long. You’ll be excited, and you’ll want to move on to other areas. As you do, you’ll find that with a bit of self-respect, everything else really is quite simple.
When I started my exercise routine, I had a slender & athletic build, but I was hardly in shape. I could barely run a half mile without being winded. I didn’t like that, so I decided to change it. I began with the half mile distance, and gradually worked my way up. Soon, I could do the full mile. Shortly thereafter, it was two miles, until I finally worked my way up to 4 miles! I gave myself small attainable goals. Each goal’s completion was a shot of confidence.
I was feeding myself positive ideas about me, and I was proving to myself that I could do what I set out to do. Now, I have confidence that I could get up at this instant, grab my running shoes, hit the street, and do those 4 miles without extreme difficulty.
How did I arrive at that point? I had to convince myself that I was capable of accomplishing the goal I had set by attacking it gradually.
But, it all started with me. This principle applies to any area in which you’d like to see your confidence boosted. So, if you want to be more confident in your ability to speak publicly, then you have to start speaking publicly, initially to yourself in front of the mirror, and then to one other person, and then to 2 or 3 other people, and then 10, and then 20, until eventually you’re confident enough to speak to 100. If you want to be confident in your ability to do anything, you simply have to START DOING IT.
There is no substitute for hands on experience. You will never be confident in your ability to do something you’ve never done before. So SET YOUR GOALS, AND BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE ONE BLOCK AT A TIME!
