The Ark Sample by Jamie.Man published on 2012-01-13T22:41:35Z The Ark, Songs and Sounds in Memory of Messiaen (2008) for symphony orchestra and amplified harpsichord 'The Ark' was commissioned by the University of Birmingham as part of the Birmingham University Music Society Composition Prize (2007) which I won in my first undergraduate year. Olivier Messiaen's music, particularly his works for solo piano have from the very start, been central to my musical life. 2008 marked the centenary of the birth of Olivier Messiaen. The material for ‘The Ark’ is generated from a singular musical event. However, the stages of the metamorphosis are not presented in chronological order. The journey through the piece is like one of an Ark floating in a spherical form of time, where everything of the past co-exists with us in the present.
