JAMES CARNEY James Carney Brooklyn James Carney, a pianist and composer, leads a new sextet featuring Ravi Coltrane, Stephanie Richards, Oscar Noriega, Dezron Douglas and Tom Rainey. Their album "PURE HEART" will be released by Sunnyside Records on the 5 June 2020. The winner of the Thelonious Monk International Composers award (now the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz), Carney relocated to New York from Los Angeles in 2004. He has released the critically acclaimed albums "Green-Wood" (2007) and "Ways & Means" (2008) (Songlines recordings), in addition to a duo album with Stephan Krump entitled “Echo Run Pry” (2010) (Clean Feed). Carney also has a trio with Richard Bonnet (France, guitar) and Samuel Ber (Belgium, drums). A Chamber Music of America (CMA) award recipient, Carney approaches composition referencing the jazz tradition while incorporating a broad array of musical interests. Carney also co-founded and programed the weekly Konceptions Jazz Series which ended in December of 2018.
