Twice 5 Miles Radio (www.twice5miles.com) welcomes poet and novelist Ocean Vuong (www.oceanvuong.com) to the microphone. We're lucky to have him. Hi, James Navé here (www.jamesnave.com). I recorded this sixteen-minute interview on June 2016 in Arroyo Seco, NM, and released in June 2019. The first time I met Ocean Vuong, he had signed up to read one of his poems on the Louder Arts stage at Bar 13 in New York City, 2010. When Ocean was introduced, he walked with ease to the stage with a small chapbook in his hand. When he stepped in front of the microphone, he simply said, "Thank you for allowing me to read. I appreciate it." Ocean opened his chapbook, looked out at us, smiled, and began. It was instantly apparent that he was reading from a place deep inside himself. He only read for five minutes. He got a standing ovation when he walked off stage. Since then, Ocean has enjoyed tremendous success.
Penguin Books published his debut novel, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (June 2019). On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous has received stellar reviews in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, NPR, The Guardian, Kirkus Reviews, USA Today, Publishers Weekly, and Vanity Fair.
He is also the author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection, Night Sky with Exit Wounds, a New York Times Top 10 Book of 2016, winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize, the Whiting Award, the Thom Gunn Award, and the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. A Ruth Lilly fellow from the Poetry Foundation, his honors include fellowships from the Lannan Foundation, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, The Elizabeth George Foundation, The Academy of American Poets, and the Pushcart Prize. Enjoy this interview, and please share it with your friends.
