Occasional disc-jock, multi disciplinary designer and creative director, specialising in placemaking and regeneration, graphics and identity, exhibition design and event curation at HemingwayDesign (www.hemingwaydesign.co.uk/).
The DJ & Music Lover
Jack Hemingway has built up an admirable collection of vinyl with a penchant for the many sounds of soul whether it be modern soul, rare groove, boogie, sleazy disco, jazz-funk, Latin, deep house, acid or dubbed out techno.
His disregard for genres, styles and tempos is often reflected in his varied and energetic selections. His veritable smorgasbord of soul is sure to make you move.
The Formative Years
Jack spent his formative years surrounded by music, fashion and design. Whether it was hanging out in the Red or Dead warehouses (the fashion label his parents founded), running wild during London Fashion Week catwalk shows or marching around the family home in weird and wonderful outfits with his brother and sisters to Heaven 17’s, (We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang... Dressing up has been the norm and part of his life from a very early age.
He left school at 16 to spend time in the HemingwayDesign studio where he learnt everything he could wish to know about the creative industries from his parents.
In 2009 Jack turned The Tate Liverpool into a silent disco as part of their This is Sculpture Series, curating the exhibition Sculpture Remixed which featured works by Ron Mueck and Antony Gormley set within a space more reminiscent of a 1970s New York discotheque than art gallery.
In August 2010 the HemingwayDesign team launched the highly acclaimed and hugely popular Vintage Festival (www.vintagefestival.co.uk/) where he was responsible for developing the iconic branding and overseeing marketing, production, creative direction and the curation.
Two successful seasons designing and creative directing the Hemingway x Hush Puppies collaboration saw a once tired brand given a youthful context and repositioned in their marketplace.
Most recently, Jack has led the design and creative vision behind the rebirth, restoration and regeneration of the iconic Dreamland pleasure park in Margate. His current projects with HemingwayDesign see him working across brand identity, interiors, landscape planning and housing regeneration, to exhibitions, event planning, products and fashion – doing it all with a community-focused conscience.
Jack DJs from time to time but you’re just as likely to catch him on the dance floor as behind the turntables.
