Snow pellets by It was my favorite planet published on 2011/11/24 18:09:29 +0000 November 19, 2011 Our first snowfall of the season and it was loud. At first it was difficult to tell if it was sleet or rain or hail, what was coming down at the time of this recording looked like miniature snowballs about the diameter of a BB (less than 1/8 inch across). From a distance there was a generic hissing sound, which you can hear at the beginning of the recording as I descended our front steps down to street level. Then I began shuffling about our boulevard flower garden, trying to capture the sound as the pellets hit the dried leaves piled up around the dead plants. That's when you can hear individual pellets striking the ground and leaves. To me it was reminiscent of the ping pong balls dumped on Mr. Moose (early 1960s Captain Kangaroo children's television show). Within 15 minutes of this recording the snow had begun to fall in a more recognizably flakey form, and a half hour later it was coming down in fluffy clusters, undetectable to my middle-aged human ears.
