In STEM fields, what you know, combined with who you know, is where the opportunities lie. Yes, you must be an expert in your field of expertise, know the literature and the methodologies, as well as understand the significance of your work. This is critical. But at the end of the day, it is people who make research and innovation happen. Transformational collaborations between academia and industry actually begin when two people connect, share ideas and commit to making it happen. To ensure Australia leads on the international stage, we need to increase translation and commercialization of our standout high-quality research. But many PhD students and postdoctoral researchers do not know how to engage with industry. They ask questions like: "How do I network?", "What do they want to know?", and "How do I pitch my research?".
