Emergence (Disquiet0240) by ikjoyce published on 2016-08-05T15:38:29Z This week's Junto is to create a track with a rhythmic/ melodic structure that slowly and almost imperceptibly emerges from a static drone. I tuned a Doepfer A-143-4 quad VCO to an interesting chord as my drone, sampling it in Clouds as well as sending it out to my mixer and on to some Big Sky reverb. The right channel of clouds feeds out to a Disting set in clockable delay, and then back in to be mixed with the input on the left channel. The Left output goes to the board. Tides is sent a 14 note sequence from Dark Time sequencer. To start off, the drone plays alone, then I fade in the output from Clouds, which at this stage has large grain sizes and soft edges, and is also full on the internal reverb. I gradually reduce the reverb and grain size and add a more gritty texture. At this stage I start bringing in a 'bass drum' (which is a pinged resonant filter) and 'snare drum' (which is filtered white noise). Then I bring in Tides, fade out the main drone, change the pattern of triggers to Clouds, and start sending a sequence to a few of the VCAs in the drone to mix things up a bit. At this point the track is at it's most rhythmic. I then faded the snare and Tides out (adding reverb to make it move away), and then brought the drone back in before stopping. This is a single take, 100% modular synth performance, no overdubs or post processing.
