It was 10 years ago when Hype Mike devoted his heart and mind to djing. Getting inspiration from his teenage idols such as Cut Chemist, DJ Numark, DJ Shadow, Craze, and A Trak; he made it his life's mission to be part of the culture and lifestyle that is the dj. His musical background started at the age of 10, when he was enrolled in his elementary schools band program. His instrument of choice would be the trumpet. From then on, his passion for music simply grew, and with the passing years of middle school and high school, he was still deeply involved with reading music, learning new instruments such as baritone, tuba, trombone, bass drum, and tenor drums just to name a few. While in high school, he started to become influenced by the hip hop culture. For him, it started with a little breakdancing with fellow students, then evolved into a deeper interest in emcees, then finally, when he was surfing the net, found a video of a live performance by Cut Chemist and Numark. They performed 'Lesson 6", which he had heard numerous times on Jurassic 5's EP. It was at that moment that he had found his calling. Since hip hop was indeed what he loved, and also the fact that he had experience as a drummer, he started spinning hip hop as well as drum and bass. Being that he was mesmerized by the scratching skills of Cut Chemist and also because he had a sense of rhythm and timing from his days as a drummer, he practiced continuously at scratching and beat juggling. Mixing, of course came first. But from studying the dj's that he's looked up to over the years, it wasn't long before he was able to start djing at some local bars and parties. When he returned from Arizona with his new found talent, he was surprised to learn that some of his closest friends that he had been involved with through the hip hop scene had also taken an interest in djing. It was a matter of time before he would be a part of a group of dj's that had a very broad variety of musical styles and skills. While his main expertise was hip hop and drum & bass, he maintained versatility by spinning other genres such as reggaeton, house, dubstep, moombahton, glitch, and many others. As he proceeds to dedicate himself to, what he considers a lifestyle and culture, he hopes to one day, become the kind of dj that he's looked up to after all these years. World Class!
