The paper was entitled '‘The desperate, the doubtful and the sperate’: John Symcott and attempts at Irish Exchequer reform, 1570-1575'. Deirdre Fennell completed a BA in History and Celtic Civilisation in NUI, Galway in 2014, achieving first class honours and the History prize for her dissertation. She is now undertaking a PhD at NUI Galway, examining the early career and first term as Lord Deputy (1571-1575) of Sir William Fitzwilliam of Milton, a Tudor figure who served as Vice-Treasurer, Treasurer-at-War, Lord Justice and Lord Deputy of Ireland, and lived during the reigns of four Tudor monarchs. A particular focus of her research is the correspondence of Fitzwilliam, who wrote extensively and at length both to people at Elizabeth’s court and to many female relations of his own.
