more info:
Singer and pianist HENRY SOUL's latest live shows give scope to his diverse talents in a high energy solo act:
AN exciting repertoire reveals bebop and jazz standards, funk and soul tunes, as well as the introduction of his
newest originals in an electronic groove and funky jazz vibe before eventually kicking up the energy with live DJ
jams to Electro, Chillout, Afro-Latin and Funky House tracks - teaming up with live DJs on the decks or performing
solo to his own, original DJ tunes.
HIS jazz tunes feature among others Charlie Parker's 'Donna Lee' and 'Round Midnight; his own original composi-
tions are in a funky R&B vein à la Curtis Mayfield to James Brown, yet revealing a distinctly unique colour with
some French lyrics or Thai blowpipe 'Kaen'. It's high energy fun and original in style.
Henry Soul started out quite differently though... more in the rock and pop world.
A BIOGRAHY
Of Anglo-Thai origins and a budding teen star, Japan beckoned with an offer to release a single. In Tokyo, the discovery of live jazz opened new horizons. A year on, he moved to Hollywood. The Sex Pistol’s last concert in San Francisco inspired and Henry kick started his new band into Hollywood’s post-punk avant-garde rock scene: Whiskey a GoGo, Club Lingerie, TV show 'New Wave Theater', etc….
ON concert tour in New York, the city’s artistic vibe of Andy Warhol’s 80's prodded Henry Soul to settle there, expanding on one hand into the avant-garde scene with performance art shows on Wall Street, the LaMamma Theatre and the Pyramid Club, while on the other hand developing his singing and piano skills on a more intimate local scene in jazz cafés and clubs such as the Café Metropolis and One Fifth.
THE early Nineties' World Music brought Henry Soul to Paris, and playing with European, American and African musicians marked a turning point for him: jazz and soul began playing a greater role and his own sound took shape: his voice gained a distinct character lending his original music a touch of soulful groove. Henry Soul played at clubs Les Bouchons, Folies Pigalle, later at Cithéa, Latitude Jazz Club and 'Transmusicale de Rennes' festival, featuring guest appearances by musicians as diverse as Edmundo Carneiro, Brazilian percussionist of St Germain & Tania Maria, Cameroonian Raymond Doumbé, one of Myriam Mkeba’s bassists, Australian trumpeter David Lewis, band leader of Paris Combo or the American jazz drummer Sangoma Everett.
RECORDING in London @ Jazzy B's famous Soul II Soul Studio in Camden Town, the new and vibrant DJ and acid live jazz scenes of the late 90's attracted Henry Soul to stay. Electro-beats and nu-funk were a refreshing influence, introducing a more popular and modern feel. Concerts include the Soho Jazz festival, the world famous Jazz Café and local clubs with guests such as jazz saxophonist Tony Kofi. Another feature became the dance/club scene where Henry Soul performed live in duo with Djs. A set-up successfully continued in Bangkok’s famed Bed Supperclub and Metropolitan Hotel Lounge just to mention a few.
HIS most recent successful solo live shows alongside bands and dj's in Bochum and Berlin in Germany have established encouraged a continuation in that direction. And of course besides being a solo act, he never misses out on the chances to perform with a live band.
TODAY, through all major influences, his sense of fun, energy and openness in making music found its way onto his unique live performances culminating in his recordings,
“ I think to sum up my musical feelings, there has to be a sense of joy, and all other sentiments that encumbers life.
A WORLD CITIZEN, my artistry lies in four continents, my soul in… Music. ”
