“The power of music, whether joyous or cathartic must steal on one unawares, come spontaneously as a blessing or a grace--” ― Oliver Sacks, Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain
Behind HBT’s music, a belief that experimentalism and eclecticism shouldn’t be neither hyper-specific nor consensual, but suprising, urgent and dangerous. Playing around with unsafe choices, paradox and humor, with genres and techniques that do not fit together ; HBT’s take on electronic and experimental music is a cunning, audacious, and quite blurry statement, aimed at unsettling the listener.
Julien Haguenauer is also the founder - hand-in-hand with Francois X - of the french record label : DEMENT3D. Known for launching acts like Polar Inertia, DSCRD, Ligovskoï, Hiss:1292 and releasing an In Aeternam Vale album in 2016.
His first EP “ To Kill A Heartbeat” under the moniker HBT will be released on Dawn Records in March 2017. The record explores the possibilities of crashing drone synths and a complex kind of techno with an old, off-tuned piano.
Also, he is also among the cast of remixers of Ligovskoï’s new EP, alongside Abdulla Rashim and Peder Mannerfelt, to see the day in March 2017 on DEMENT3D.
HBT has also been active on the collaborations side, especially with Voiski and Fossil Moth (one of the five members of DSCRD). With the latter, they form “Stego”, and have signed a first track for the compilation “Some Like It Rough” on the french label Tripalium. With Voiski, they perform as HBTVSK, and have lately remixed Brendon Moeller aka Echologist, released in june 2016 on a new label : Submersive. Their critically acclaimed remix of Ligovskoï on DEMENT3D back in 2014 is also worth a listen.
Often seen playing experimental lives, he has had the opportunity to play his music in many prestigious settings in Paris, such as Grand Palais (closing of the expo Monumenta 2014), La Gaité Lyrique, ENSAPC (Beaux-arts de Cergy), art spaces like Ygrec, Le Générateur, Galerie Florence Leoni, and a few private concerts.
His brand new live, introduced at the latest DEMENT3D Label Night in february 2016 (Gaîté Lyrique), is a provocation hurled at the conventional format of electronic lives. Drumsticks replace sequencers, drone improvisations on analog synths crash into free jazz influences, african rhythms and prepared piano samples. It is also a collaboration with Modular Video Artists “Konpyuta”
By and large, Julien Haguenauer’s artistic journey, enriched by a particularly chaotic diversity, leads him to accelerate collisions between different ideas that shouldn’t normally fit together.
