MEDA 101 Sound File by RabbitohAdi published on 2014/03/26 10:26:42 +0000 This sound piece is a response to the work of Laurie Anderson. The piece purposefully presents omniscient, authoritative voices through news broadcast samples and a computerised female voice. The computerised dialogue is designed to personify "the media", and the use of direct language provides the character with authority. The piece demonstrates modern day practices of the media, whereby mass broadcast news seem to “group” suburbs around Western Sydney, while individualizing the suburbs within the east or closer to the city. This practice seemingly damages the Western Sydney name as it is constantly associated with crime. Completely the opposite seems to occur with the Eastern suburbs, such as Bondi. This is demonstrated through direct juxtaposition of news reports around crime in the Western Sydney and Eastern Sydney suburbs. This piece is a critique of and direct response to the authority and power of the media within a Sydney context.
