Dismember - Override Of The Overture by Hammerheart Records published on 2012/03/05 20:48:12 +0000 This is the debut album of the Swedish Death Metal band Dismember, a classic and likely one of the best albums in this genre ever! This is the stream that Death Metal drinks from and many albums came before this, but to our ears none surpass it. Up to this point, Death Metal was still maturing and by the late ‘80s death metal had pretty much been established in terms of sound. Entombed’s first full-length “Left Hand Path” preceding this came close to defining a scene when it truly launched the Swedish sound on all fronts. However, what Dismember presented with “Like An Ever Flowing Stream” (with a fantastic Dan Seagrave cover art) is a near-flawless album that tops any Death Metal that came before it. Everything tweaked as Death Metal matured became perfected on this album: guitar tone, bass back-up, growling style, menacing leads, memorable events, remarkable composition and riffs. As much one sentence can have value, let “riffs” in the last sentence hold the most – the riffs on this album are impeccable, malevolent, sick, and insane! These riffs, backed by a deafening bass, are embalmed in the distinctive chainsaw guitar tone. Nothing’s half-assed or timid whatsoever; the aggression here trumps all Death Metal while maintaining pride and class. From Kärki’s demonic growling, through the annihilating drumming of Estby, and onto the forefront with Bomqvist, Sennebäck, Cabeza, and Andersson, this album is the pinnacle of Death Metal. “Like An Ever Flowing Stream” is ideal Death Metal in every way, and its place in Death Metal history is second to none.
