Becoming a musician at a young age, he began his musical journey writing acoustic singer/songwriter songs in his mid-teens. At the same time he began producing electronic music in Sony ACID Music. “Yeah, I really didn’t have a clue of what I was doing. I was just dropping loops and samples here and there, and recording my own vocals. I can only imagine how cringe-worthy they were. I had never even heard an electronic song. I just thought it was cool to make computer music. At the time I was much more focused on playing guitar.” It wasn’t until his early 20s that he fell in love with electronic music and how it brought so many people from all walks of life together. “The first time I heard the DJ Wag remix of Yakooza’s “Cocaine”, I flipped out. No song I’ve ever heard gave me a rush like that one did. I still can’t believe tunnel trance was my gateway into the realm of electronic music. I love listening to many genres and I think my music represents that.” Fast forward to today. Gnome Island is a passionate producer that simply loves writing music and entertaining. He has DJed since his mid-20s and more recently started producing his own tracks. “I thought it would be cool to play my own tracks live. I’ve had the pleasure of DJing on FOX television, for a couple of professional sports teams and I grew my podcast to over 100k subscribers. Although it was an exciting time, I felt like something was missing. I felt the need to write my own music. So I took a step back from DJing and buried myself in my home studio. And now, here I am.” Gnome Island draws inspiration from many 808-heavy artists such as Wuki, Zomboy, TWRK, Munchi, Ookay and Diplo. He also enjoys the softer sides of electronic genres including artists like EDEN, Mura Masa and Cashmere Cat. “Yeah, I really listen to everything, not just electronic music. There are a lot of great artists here in Dallas as well. Left/Right, AFK and The Hi-Yahs are people I’ve looked up to for a while.” Gnome Island has no limits on genres. He simply writes what he likes although most of the time his songs encompass the coveted 808 kick drum, a broken beat and a plethora of chopped up vocals. Stay tuned!
