Brian Gillespie is a music aficionado and has used his passion and knowledge in various arenas in the music industry. His love of music moved him in the dj realm where he began to open for such acts as A Tribe Called Quest, Souls of Mischief, De La Soul, George Clinton, Jamiroquai, Public Enemy, Dave Clarke and Advent.. [Soft Break]Here, he brought in such acts as: Slum Village, Jay Dilla, Tricky, Galactic, Cut Chemist, Peanut Butter Wolf and others. In the Mid 90's he took the plunge into the after hours and Rave Scene being responsible for the famous 'Poor Boy' parties at Detroit's historical Packard Plant. He was one of the top resident Djs at the famous Motor Lounge for over 6 years. He is responsible for the formation and the business operation of many record labels including: Blue Collar Projects Records, Chairman of the Board, D.E.T. Only, Twilight 76, Databass, Throw and Rewind Records. He was also responsible for the signing of 'The Detroit Grand Pubahs' to Jive Records and the famous hit 'Sandwiches'. He is respected as a collector of music with his personal tastes ranging from Detroit Funk, Spiritual Jazz to Boogie, Hip Hop to Electro, Techno, Bass.
He started to DJ in the early nineties out of WPHS in Warren and was instrumental in bringing hip hop and electronic music communities together. His musical palate encompasses Detroit Jazz, rare groove, funk, hip hop, house, electro, and techno. Brian’s greatest influences have been hip hop and techno artists from Detroit and his friends around him. He acquired a great amount of knowledge from artists and Djs he met while working at Record Time’s Dance room in Roseville, MI from 1992- 1999. In 1993 he began promoting warehouse parties throughout the Midwest under the name Poorboy at places like the Packard with longtime friends Dat Duong and Jon Santos. They brought in acts such as Claude Young, Carl Craig (paperclip people live), and Theo Parrish, Jeff Mills & first one to have Funk, & Hip Hop, Ghetto tech Booty room. Brian had the Vision and Golden Ear for Detroit talent early on. His contribution to the hip hop scene included running one of Detroit's first all Funk, Soul, Hip Hop music nights called Family Funktion- at the now legendary Alvin's nightclub. Gillespie & (Cousin) D.L. Jones was instrumental in bringing live bands and DJs together playing jazz, funk, soul and hip hop. They booked acts like Phat Kat, Eminem, J Dilla and Slum Village, Theo Parrish, Galactic, and Tricky Cut Chemist, Peanut Butter Wolf, Moodymann. Family Funktion celebrated a 15 year reunion at Alvin’s in Detroit last year with Dennis Coffey & Recloose , Detroit Motown funk brother.
Aside from DJing, another important influence of Brian’s career came from working at Record Time as the buyer for the dance room from 1992 - 1999. It was here that he came to know many renowned Detroit musicians including Mike Huckaby, Rick Wade, Will Web, Patrick Scott Grooves, Dan Bell and Claude Young. From 2000 – 2005 he was Manager/Buyer for Hearwax Records in three DJ Supply stores. He has also worked with Ron Murphy of National Sound Corporation. He has conducted lectures at the legendary submerge building. One of his most lucrative projects is being DJ Starski of Starski and Clutch. He and Todd Osborn played live and put out the popular mix CD “Don’t stop til you JIT enough” and ghetto tech album “Detroit Hustle”. (Databass records) Gillespie, with Rick Sadlowski and DJ Godfather distributed Detroit records for about 16 years and still operate electrobounce.com, an online MP3 store and distributor dedicated to pushing and promoting underground dance music such as Detroit Ghetto Tech, Chicago Ghetto House, Juke, Electro, Baltimore Club, and Techno.
As a member of Detroit Red Bull Music Academy for the last 7 years, he has interviewed Dennis Coffey, Claude Von Stroke, Mike Huckaby, Anthony “Shake” Shakir, DJ Houseshoes, Clark Warner, D.L. Jones, DJ Dick, Todd Osborn, Ectomorph and other legendary musicians, as well as conducted lectures. He is currently promoting and recruiting for the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy to be held in Tokyo.
